Problem: Annual Nitrogen Supersaturation in raceway water during certain times of the year is causing a significant increase in the mortality rate in our trout population. Cause: Aeration media in the Packed Column Degassing Towers are being coated with manganese, decreasing the effectiveness of the aeration, diffusion of saturated nitrogen and separation of hydrogen sulfide. Solution: Install Raceway Diffusers at head of individual raceways Result: Increase in dissolved oxygen levels, elimination of destructive nitrogen levels and reduction of the detrimental impact of hydrogen sulfide. Diffuser Cost: Material cost is $800.00 per unit Labor cost furnished by Norfork NFH Staff. How can you help? Be a Friend ~ Sponsor a Diffuser The FNNFH have decided to transfer the Benefactor Membership fees ($500) to a Raceway Diffuser Fund. The Norfork NFH needs 24 diffusers at this time to be effective. That is a total cost of about $20,000.00 or the equivalent of 40 Benefactor Memberships. If you, your organization or business would like to participate in this very critical effort, please contact a FNNFH Director at 870-321-2455 or 870- 321-2456 to secure your Benefactor membership. Benefactor names will be added to the FNNFH Benefactor plaque located in the Visitor Center. All contributions will be accepted. You can specify that your contribution be directed to the Raceway Diffuser Fund. Any contribution over $100 will merit a membership to the Friends of the Norfork National Fish Hatchery. You may deduct the full amount of your gift because you did not receive a direct benefit as a result of this gift.
